Fiat to Move Jeep Production Stateside

Last year at this time, Italy-based Fiat pledged to build a range of small Jeep- and Alfa-branded SUVs at their factory in Turin, Italy. But, due to the changing value of the dollar compared to the Euro, sources says Fiat may be moving the production of these America-bound vehicles to the U.S.
While none of this has been confirmed, Automotive News has reported that, "Last November, Fiat pledged to build a range of small Jeep-and-Alfa-branded SUVs at its Italian factory, investing one-billion euros ($1.44 billion) to retool the facility. If production is moved to the U.S., workers at Fiat's oldest production facility might be left with only a small city car to build."1
When Fiat originally announced their intent to invest in an Italian plant; the Euro was already strong against the dollar. Since then, the Euro has gained about nine-percent on the American dollar, and the prospect of paying Italian workers for a U.S.-bound product is beginning to look less attractive to the automaker. Even more than that, "Fiat's market share in Europe, its current largest market, has been shrinking over the past few years, dropping to 7.2 percent from 8.1 percent a year prior." 2
