Our founder, Henry Ford, is known for many things, but one of them is revolutionizing American industry and working-class welfare. He shocked the world by announcing a $5 minimum wage per day in 1914, more than twice the standard rate at the time, and he also pioneered shorter work weeks and more days off. Ford believed that when you take care of your workers, they'll take care of you.

Since then, Ford Motor Company has tried to maintain a legacy of compassion, appreciation, and hospitality, not just towards its workers but to everyone. But when the coronavirus COVID-19 epidemic erupted, it was time for Ford to live up to that reputation. With no time to waste, the company swiftly paired up with medical and scientific experts - making plans for mass production to aid in the fight against the pandemic sweeping the world.

Ford Aids in Some Serious Production of In-Demand Respirators, Masks, and More

The Ford Motor Company is one of the best in the business when it comes to production and manufacturing capabilities, but the medical field is not one of our specialties. That's why we're partnering with 3M and the UAW to quickly produce mass quantities of much-needed medical supplies for health care workers and patients.

The new production line includes hundreds of thousands of air-purifying respirators, which feature a hood and face shield to cover the head and shoulders. These impressive respirators have a high-efficiency (HEPA) filter system that delivers filtered air for up to eight hours. Additionally, mass production continues for face masks, shields, and reusable gowns.

It's been reported that by July 4, Ford-supplier Joyson Safety Systems will cut and sew an incredible 1.3 million gowns, designed to be washable up to 50 times. Ford is also providing manufacturing support to assist Thermo Fisher Scientific to increase production of collection kits used for patient testing.

Ford Enterprise Product Line Management VP Speaks on Production

In April when plans kicked off, Jim Baumbick, Vice President of Ford Enterprise Product Line Management, said, "We knew that to play our part helping combat coronavirus, we had to go like hell and join forces with experts like 3M to expand production of urgently needed medical equipment and supplies."

Baumbick and other leaders at Ford are prime examples of how Ford operates - putting people first. When it comes to health and wellbeing, there is no time to waste. Now, thousands of health care workers and patients fighting COVID-19 are better prepared for the front lines of this battle.
