Buying a truck is a lot different than buying a car. There are
different engines, different specifications, and different terms used, ones
that apply only to trucks. Truck cab sizes are one area where this is the case.
Just what the heck is a crew cab?
How does it differ from a double cab or an extended cab?
And, how regular is a regular cab?
At the Gillie Hyde Auto Group in Glasgow, Kentucky, we believe an
informed customer is our best customer. And, we want you to be as informed as
possible when it comes to buying a truck.
OK. Just what do these truck cab sizes mean?
Pay attention. There's going to be a test at the end.

Regular Cab Size Pickup Truck Explained
A regular cab is the smallest of the cab sizes for pickup trucks. It usually can fit two or three adults, depending on the size of the pickup truck and the seating configuration. A regular cab has only one row for seats in the cab. These seats can either be one long bench seat, or two captain chairs or bucket seats. Now, to confuse the issue, different truck manufacturers call
their regular cabs by different names, which have been market-tested for
optimal customer confusion.
Ford calls its F-150 pickup truck's regular cab size the F-150
Standard Cab. Thankfully, the Ram 1500, the GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet
Silverado 1500 call their regular cab pickups, Regular Cab.
A regular cab pickup truck is the most inexpensive cab size, but
for this cash savings, you sacrifice the number of people you can fit in the
cab. If you have a family and opt for a regular cab, you won't be transporting
all of the family when using your pickup truck. You'll need a bigger cab size,
like the Extended Cab.
Extended Cab Size Pickup Truck Explained
An Extended Cab pickup is the next bigger size in pickup truck cabs. It has either three or four doors to access its second row of seats. This second row of seats is the main differentiator between a regular cab and an extended cab.Ford calls its extended cab F-150 a Super Crew. The Chevrolet
Silverado 1500 and the GMC Sierra 1500 call their extended cab size a Double
Cab. And Ram 1500 calls their extended cab a Quad Cab.
Confused yet?
The benefit of an extended cab is that you get a second row of
seats and are still able to order the longest pickup truck bed the manufacturer
offers. You can take more people and the maximum amount of equipment to the job
with an extended cab pickup truck.
Crew Cab Size Pickup Truck Explained
The Crew cab is the most spacious of all pickup truck cabs. It emphasizes passenger comfort over bed payload size and capacity. You're not able to get a crew cab and a long pickup bed in the same pickup. This is the most expensive pickup truck cab, mainly because it usually has more luxury amenities and the second-row doors are full-sized.Ford calls their crew cab F-150 an F-150 SuperCrew. Guess what?
Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 are called Crew Cabs.
Hurrah, for a little more simplicity and a little less confusion!
